Overprotecting The Forests Could Be A Mistake
In regard to "Public-land policy: Babbitt is finding the balance" (Top of the News, Mar. 29), it should be up to resource managers to determine the way to reach goals. Clear-cutting, in itself, is not an evil. It is one of many tools available to timberland managers. Nature uses this tool--in the form of fires, tornadoes, hurricanes, and other apparently devastating occurrences--to revitalize the ecosystem. The result is almost always a more vigorous and diverse environment. This is is how the pine species and others are naturally established.
