Talon And Ykk Get Pinched

YKK (USA), the country's largest zipper manufacturer, has been caught with its pants down. The Federal Trade Commission on Mar. 25 said YKK had agreed to settle charges related to its attempt to collude with its main competitor, Talon. According to an FTC complaint, YKK asked Talon to stop providing free installation equipment to customers--and offered to do the same. Because the two companies together own 82% of the U.S. market, and the free equipment represented a form of competition between the two, the FTC ruled that this amounted to unreasonable restraint of competition in the zipper market.
