It may be hard to believe, but less than 15 years ago, the mutual fund was an endangered species. Investors were pulling more money out of funds than they were putting in, and the number of funds was shrinking. It seemed only a matter of time before most of them closed up shop for good. But buoyant stock and bond markets, the development of a host of new investment products, and lots of savvy marketing have transformed mutual funds into one ofthe most dynamic and suc-cessful industries in the country.
