Magnetic Bearings That Can Take The Heat

Magnetic bearings are an engineer's dream: Because they hold a rotating shaft suspended in space, they do away with the need for ball bearings, lubricants, and the like. Moreover, precise electronic controls can dampen vibrations that cut the efficiency and shorten the life of machinery. But most magnetic bearings rely on magnets that work only when powered by electrical current, so they're bulky power hogs.
