Small businesspeople aren't the only people in an anxious mood. The Conference Board reports that its consumer-confidence index in October hit its lowest level in eight months. Less than 10% of consumers feel business conditions are good, while 45% say they are bad. Some 43% of respondents to its monthly survey say they put off a major purchase in the past six months because of economic uncertainties. And nearly 25% report that someone in their household was unemployed during the past year, with the average unemployment spell lasting for about six months.
