Slovak officials started pushing eastern Europe to the brink of a political crisis this week when they began diverting water from the Danube for the controversial Gabckovo Dam. The 15-year-old project is strongly mpposed by Hungary, which threatens economic reprisals, and it could also sour relations with the Czech republic. Germany is throwing its political and economic weight behind Hungary.
