For many of today's most dazzling computer-graphics effects, such as "morphing" a car into an airplane, it's necessary to describe actual objects to a computer. The usual method has been to touch the object's surface with a probe, point by point. At each touch, the computer measures the probe's position in three-dimensional space by its interaction with a surrounding field of magnetism or ultrasound.
