New Home Sales Are Stronger Than They Look

Although single-family housing starts posted a healthy 8.5% gain in August, many experts believe the sharp 6.1% decline in new-home sales in the same month suggests that fourth-quarter starts will still be relatively weak. But economist Mark Lasky of DRI/McGraw-Hill points out that over the past year, monthly new-home sales have been consistently revised upward.
