Labor Roars At Food Lion

A yearlong investigation by the Labor Dept. has uncovered "substantial" overtime and child-labor violations at Food Lion, a fast-growing supermarket chain. The department began its investigation after the United Food & Commercial Workers union complained that company officials regularly required employees to work after they had punched out. Labor also found violations of federal rules prohibiting children from working in hazardous jobs. A Food Lion spokesman says the company has been "unjustly targeted" by a UFCW "smear campaign."
