Portable computers have slimmed down considerably since the days of the original Compaq, a 30-odd-pound "luggable." But even today's six-pound notebook PCs are "arm-extenders," says Joel J. Kocher, a senior vice-president of Dell Computer Corp. Indeed, industry analysts say sales are starting to slow in the torrid notebook market as consumers anticipate a new generation of smaller, lighter, and more capable machines.
