Cassoni's Illness Shakes Up Xerox

Xerox Executive Vice-President Vittorio Cassoni returned to his native Italy on May 18 for radiation treatment for an inoperable brain tumor. Cassoni's illness is a sudden and unexpected turn of events for Xerox, which is reorganizing to expand productivity and respond faster to customers and markets. It hired the former Olivetti executive last month to bring his computer expertise to Xerox' $13.8 billion document-processing business.

Cassoni is head of U.S. customer operations and four key business divisions. These units will report on a temporary basis to CEO Paul Allaire. A company spokesman says it is unclear when or if Cassoni will return to Xerox.
