White South Africans had reason to feel proud for the first time in decades when they voted overwhelmingly to support President F.W. de Klerk's revolutionary efforts to end apartheid. For his triumphant facing-down of intolerant racists, De Klerk has earned international admiration. Indeed, South Africa's steady shift from society of hate to one of inclusion ranks alongside the collapse of communist regimes in the former Soviet Union and the East bloc as a milestone in history. Now the real work of building a new society can begin.
