New medical technology such as this PET scanner is allowing brain researchers to peer deep into the mind. By tracking increased blood flow, one scan (top right) shows brain areas active during a memory test. A second (bottom right) reveals the breain region where people feel one form of anxiety. The scans can also pinpoint the location of sad thoughts. And by unlocking secrets about how the brain works, researchers are closing in on once-intractable diseases. Already, there are new drugs that reduce injury after stroke and new techniques for insertting cells or genes directly into victims's brains to supply missing chemicals.
