American Airlines Swings The Ax
With expenses rising and losses mounting, American Airlines plans to cut about 1,250 U.S. jobs in early February. It now employs 97,000 worldwide. Parent AMR, estimated to have lost more than $215 million in 1991, recently said it would slash $8 billion from capital spending over the next four years. The cuts will hit mostly gate agents, baggage handlers, and other ground workers.
