A fight is brewing between the European Commission -- which wants to slap restrictions on a broad range of advertising -- and big consumer companies, publishers, and ad agencies. Brussels has already succeeded in banning tobacco advertising from TV and wants to get it out of print media. Also looming are regulations on liquor, car, and toy ads. Among the groups fighting back is the European Publishers Council, which represents some 100 of the largest media owners. It is starting a Europe-wide newspaper campaign blasting Brussels for trampling on free speech, among other things. But lost revenues may be a greater concern.
