A Sharper Picture For Cable Subscribers

Cable Television Laboratories Inc., the industry's research arm in Boulder, Colo., has set an Oct. 31 deadline for proposals from companies on video-compression methods to be used as industry standards. Cable Labs predicts that by 1993, cable operators will start receiving their satellite feeds from the cable networks in digital format. Squeezing more channels onto fewer satellite transponders will result in savings of tens of millions of dollars, predicts Richard Prodan, director of Cable Labs' Advanced Television Laboratory.
