While competition from computer workstations has been devastating to minicomputer makers, the desktops are still bought mostly by engineers and scientists. Aside from number-crunching Wall Street brokerages, few nontechnical businesses have been willing to pay the $10,000 extra that a fully loaded workstation costs compared with a personal computer.
