S., Europe, and Japan have quietly been trying to forge a common standard for storing patent data on the compact-disk-size platters known as CD ROMs. It now appears the effort is headed for a showdown in October. That's when U. S. and European officials expect to settle on their final specification--one that's at odds with what Japan wants.
