The Patriot's stunning success in the gulf war left many Europeans with missile envy. Now, they plan to compete against upgraded Patriot and Hawk missiles, both built by Raytheon Co., with their own antimissile program. Eurosam, a consortium of France's Aerospatiale and Thomson-CSF and Italy's Alenia, hopes to replace 40 batteries of aging Hawk missiles in France, Italy, and Spain. The tab could hit $4 billion. An additional 275 batteries in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia are a potentially huge market.
