For 1991 salaries up to $125,000, any sideline income will be subject to the 2.9% medicare part of the Social Security self-employment tax, warns Prentice-Hall's Tax Bulletin. Until now, withholding up to a single wage base ($51,300 for 1990) spared you further Social Security tax.
