[vc_row][vc_column width=”1\/1″][vc_column_text]Bloomberg photographer Dado Galdieri is based in Brazil, where he shoots a variety of subjects, from World Cup preparations to protests in Rio de Janeiro’s favelas to religious festivals. In Depth recently spoke with Dado to discuss his work and how he gets his shots.<\/em><\/p>\n

What issues have you covered for Bloomberg that might be ignored by other media outlets? Why is it important that Bloomberg cover these issues, even if other outlets do not?<\/strong>
\nI’ve covered a variety of issues, from the construction of the World Cup stadiums to protests and festivals. Sometimes I’m assigned a specific topic and other times I shoot things that I see that are interesting. The issues I cover are sometimes smaller and that means other outlets might not be aware. What Bloomberg has is a large audience \u2014 so anything that goes through Bloomberg has a lot of credibility. When Bloomberg puts some attention on a story that is important, it can become a new trend and it achieves credibility and helps the public that we serve.<\/p>\n

You shoot a variety of subjects for Bloomberg. Some of those subjects, like the protests in the favelas, can be dangerous. Do you ever feel unsafe when shooting these types of subjects? Do you do anything to protect yourself, like wear protective gear?<\/strong>
\nIt can be unsafe to cover protests, but I always weigh the cost and benefit relationship and decide that it’s worth it. And no, I don’t wear any protective gear. Maybe I should invest in some!<\/p>\n

How do your subjects react to being photographed? Is there a difference in their response based on the environment (i.e. urban versus rural)?<\/strong>
\nThese days, the people I photograph in the cities are mostly involved with the technology industry. They are concerned with how the photo will reflect the vision they have of themselves. They are putting themselves in the place that they want to be seen. In the countryside, people are \u2026 more pure in a sense. People sometimes say not to take their photograph, especially when it’s a sensitive subject being photographed. And with things like protests, when you’re in the middle of a situation, people are naturally suspicious because they don’t know who’s who.<\/p>\n

What are your favorite subjects to photograph? What attracts you to these subjects?
\n<\/strong>I enjoy photographing people in situations that are underreported. I also enjoy the clash between different areas of the population, like the people living in favelas and the executives responsible for coordinating construction of the World Cup and Olympic stadiums. I’m attracted to different industries as well \u2014 energy, transportation and so on.<\/p>\n
