Mary Meeker, a partner at the firm and leading expert on the Internet and technology, explored the latest storylines in the online world. Many news and media professionals make sure to take a look at Meeker&#8217;s annual report on the state of the Internet. This year, as always, she provided some valuable insight into how the internet continues to evolve.<\/p>\n<p>Some of Meeker&#8217;s key findings included:<\/p>\n<p><strong>More Internet users<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Given the widespread use of the Internet, many may think it&#8217;s completed its world takeover and has few lands left to conquer. But that&#8217;s not entirely the case, as there are parts of the globe where online presence is still growing. Global Internet usage peaked in 2013 with about 2.6 billion users worldwide, and KPCB found that growth is now slowing down. As expected, Internet usage growth is concentrated in developing nations that are difficult to monetize, including India, Indonesia and Nigeria. These countries have been slower to incorporate Internet technology because they have less developed media ecosystems. CPMs can be lower, and low bandwidth availability may hamper users&#8217; ability to stream rich media.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tablets and smartphones both growing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As Internet use continues to grow, so does the use of smartphones and tablets to access the web. But despite the widespread popularity of many Android and iOS devices, the mobile market is not yet saturated.<\/p>\n<p>KPCB&#8217;s data shows that the number of people subscribing to smartphone service is holding at around 20 percent. Like with Internet use, the numbers are growing fastest in previously under-penetrated markets like China, India, Brazil and Indonesia. Tablets have also shown strong sales figures in the last couple of years. Tablet sales surpassed those of desktops in mid-2012 and overtook laptops just months later. The devices are still showing a 52 percent rise year over year, and this trend appears still to be in the early stages, with plenty more room for growth ahead.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Drivers behind mobile traffic<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>People are doing more than simply buying mobile devices \u2014 they&#8217;re also showing a rapidly increasing willingness to use them for consuming online content. Mobile traffic showed a whopping 81 percent increase from 2013 to 2014 \u2014 whereas mobile accounted for only 14 percent of all global pageviews a year ago, that figure now sits at 25 percent. It&#8217;s 38 percent in Africa, 37 percent in Asia and 19 percent in North America.<\/p>\n<p>Video is one of the biggest reasons why. With people showing a greater inclination to watch clips on their handheld devices rather than conventional computers, it&#8217;s easier now than ever for mobile devices to establish a foothold with Web users.<\/p>\n<p>There are other reasons as well. One is the growing trend of \u201ccord cutting\u201d among today\u2019s consumers. With the wealth of multimedia material available online through various outlets, people are finding it less necessary to rely on traditional television sets for news and other content. In addition, consumers are beginning to use their mobile devices to perform the same functions that were once done on desktops, from consuming news content to routine tasks like checking the weather or one\u2019s bank account.<\/p>\n<p>As mobile device sales grow, this trend is contributing to major changes in the way that people access information and is worth examining for media companies or
