She spent years a world news editor before making the transition to weather coverage, where she and reporter Brian Sullivan have been reporting on everything from summer hurricanes to the winter polar vortex.<\/em><\/p>\n

In Depth recently spoke with Charlotte to discuss her passion for the weather and how that coverage fits with the rest of Bloomberg\u2019s reporting.<\/em><\/p>\n

You specialize in weather coverage. How did you get into this subject?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Early in my career, one of the first things drilled into me was how to do a wrap, pulling together material from reporters all over the country into a coherent narrative, and doing it quickly. Weather lent itself to this regularly.<\/p>\n

How did you further explore your passion for weather when you arrived at Bloomberg?<\/strong><\/p>\n

After I joined Energy Markets, my team leader, Dan Stets, quickly came to see the advantage of regular weather coverage. Natural gas markets, in particular, pay close attention to the weather. Hurricanes can shut down offshore rigs and coastal refineries. Cold can freeze production at northern shale formations and affect natural gas demand and storage levels. El Ninos change worldwide weather patterns that have a direct impact on not only energy but agriculture.<\/p>\n

Are there ebbs and flows in how busy you are, depending on seasonal weather patterns? Is there a particularly hectic time of the year for you?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Normally, I would say hurricane season is busiest, but this winter, it seems we just weren\u2019t able to get a break, with storms almost every week and unrelenting cold. The weather does follow a pattern of sorts. In the U.S., November to March is considered the heating season, when natural gas demand peaks, and of course that\u2019s when we get snow and cold. Spring is the heart of tornado and flooding season, and then the Atlantic hurricane season runs from June through November. There\u2019s rarely a dull moment.<\/p>\n

How much do you collaborate with the broader energy desk and with other Bloomberg beats overall?<\/strong><\/p>\n

There are so many people who provide so much depth to our coverage. States and Municipalities chips in with boots on the ground for storm damage and color; the Aerospace team keeps us apprised of how airlines are coping with weather; Commodities Markets adds detail on what\u2019s happening to agriculture; the Insurance team helps with financial impacts; energy teams in Asia and Europe do overnight updates to U.S. storm stories. All over Bloomberg, editors and reporters use this material to add context to stories on markets and industries.<\/p>\n
