Matt Winkler, Bloomberg editor in chief at the time, was building Bloomberg\u2019s news division and thought that was a pretty good idea. Off to Paris she went.<\/p>\n<p>Over the course of her career in Bloomberg News, Jackie has held several roles in the European bureau, covering everything from luxury goods to investment banking. Recently she moved to London to take on the role of executive editor for Global Business. <\/p>\n<p>In this edition of &#8216;Ten Minutes With&#8217;, Jackie discusses how she has successfully navigated her career at Bloomberg, her most challenging moments, and the future of Bloomberg News.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How did you arrive at Bloomberg?<\/strong><br \/>\nI was living in New York in the early 1990s, working on the<br \/>\nspot news desk of the Wall Street Journal. I was intrigued by<br \/>\nBloomberg TV &#8212; all that movement &#8212; the rolling ticker tape,<br \/>\nnews headlines, weather&#8230;it caught my attention. So when I<br \/>\napplied for jobs in Paris, where I wanted to anchor myself, I<br \/>\nheard Bloomberg was hiring and applied.<\/p>\n<p>I was beaming when Matt Winkler asked, \u201cWhen can you<br \/>\nstart?\u201d right at the end of my job interview in the New York<br \/>\noffice. He walked me through the newsroom, introduced me to<br \/>\nfolks, handed me a stack of books (Bloomberg Way and several<br \/>\nstyle books, among other literature). And that was that. I spent<br \/>\ntwo weeks in New York before my transfer to Paris. That was<br \/>\n1996. There were only a handful of people in that office and<br \/>\nBloomberg was expanding pretty significantly in the region.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why Paris?<\/strong><br \/>\nI had always had an interest in coming to France because I<br \/>\nlearned the language. I went to business school for part of my<br \/>\nlast year at university and I spent a lot of time in European<br \/>\ncountries. I lived in Belgium over a period of summers doing odd<br \/>\njobs before becoming an intern at the Wall Street Journal in<br \/>\nEurope.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tell us about your Bloomberg career<\/strong><br \/>\nI was hired in Paris to cover consumer goods, notably<br \/>\nluxury goods companies and consumer retail companies. Then it<br \/>\nwas M&amp;A, then investment banking, and then more M&amp;A. I ran the<br \/>\nDeals team with a colleague in Europe. Eventually I became<br \/>\nmanaging editor for Companies and now I\u2019ve got this job,<br \/>\nexecutive editor for Global Business. That\u2019s a lot of different<br \/>\nroles over 19 years, which is a long time!<\/p>\n<p><strong>How did you last so long in France?<\/strong><br \/>\n(LAUGH) Thank God for the Eurostar! France isn\u2019t as active<br \/>\nand noisy and bustling as London for the things I\u2019ve covered,<br \/>\nbut it is still a very prominent country with a lot of important<br \/>\nglobal companies, a lot of investment bankers, and a lot of M&amp;A<br \/>\nactivity.<\/p>\n<p>It helps being on a beat where you\u2019re breaking news about<br \/>\nsome of the biggest global companies, a lot of which are based<br \/>\non the continent or in France. But I was also able to have the<br \/>\nflexibility to go to London and stay connected to the banking<br \/>\ncommunity and source the community in that market.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is your new role?<\/strong><br \/>\nRunning Global Business (formerly Companies) from London.<br \/>\nThe name \u201cGlobal Business\u201d captures a lot of what the group\u2019s<br \/>\ngoal is: 1) it\u2019s more specific and 2) conveys a sense of mission<br \/>\nto think broadly, as part of industries that are collectively<br \/>\nreacting to similar issues: geopolitical change, economic and<br \/>\nmacro shifts, regional politics, etc., as well as their own<br \/>\nissues. It\u2019s just a broader way to capture the coverage.<\/p>\n<p>Running it from London is a bonus: I work across three time<br \/>\nzones (Asia, Europe, Americas), allowing better coordination and<br \/>\na wider optics on what makes industries tick.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What&#8217;s the key to your success as a journalist at Bloomberg?<\/strong><br \/>\nRemembering that none of us work alone and communication is<br \/>\nthe most important thing we can do. This is especially true<br \/>\ngiven the breadth of resources at our disposal. We produce<br \/>\nscoops and the smartest stories through good communication. That<br \/>\nwas the case with our GE-Alstom coverage last year, a story we<br \/>\nowned from start to finish for nearly a year, and which involved<br \/>\nDeals, several bureaus, Company teams, TV, Graphics, etc.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tell us about a memorable experience during your time with Bloomberg<\/strong><br \/>\nIt was two weeks after I was named managing editor for<br \/>\nCompanies in Europe. I went to monitor a panel on corporate CEOs<br \/>\non the topic of \u201cleaning in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m not big on public speaking. I get nervous and this was<br \/>\na room full of, I don\u2019t know, maybe a thousand or so people. It<br \/>\nwas telecast and webcast I could see my face in three different<br \/>\nscreens (LAUGH). I mean, I think anybody, even people who are<br \/>\ncomfortable, might have felt uncomfortable in those<br \/>\ncircumstances. But I was really uncomfortable; I just haven\u2019t<br \/>\ndone any of that. I\u2019ve done small roundtables or speaking to<br \/>\ngroups and the team internally. That\u2019s it.<\/p>\n<p>So, why is this so memorable? Because it was challenging on<br \/>\nso many levels! I was trying to get over my stage fright and it<br \/>\nwas coming on the back of a promotion.<\/p>\n<p>My dad watched it on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=YGJNMpPV8eY\">YouTube<\/a> and he\u2019s like, \u201cYeah.<br \/>\nYou looked really nervous in the beginning.\u201d (LAUGH) Speaking his<br \/>\nmind as usual &#8212; thanks Dad!<\/p>\n<p>I kind of calmed down over the course of the discussion and<br \/>\nby the end I was really very proud of myself for doing it. I<br \/>\nmaintained my composure. I asked all the questions I wanted. I<br \/>\nthink it was a success.<\/p>\n<p>But it was frightening as hell! (LAUGHTER)<\/p>\n<p><strong>What&#8217;s your most important story?<\/strong><br \/>\nWorking with various teams to help break BAE-EADS\u2019 attempt<br \/>\nto merge. It was fun to watch the UK media react to us breaking<br \/>\nthat. They weren\u2019t happy.<\/p>\n<p>Also working with the Finance team over the years to cover<br \/>\nkey personalities, like the Rothschild family or the investment<br \/>\nfirm Lazard, various trading scandals at banks, and senior<br \/>\nexecutive moves.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What&#8217;s been your biggest challenge?<\/strong><br \/>\nThe challenge has been in maintaining consistency<br \/>\nthroughout our various stages of our growth. From a news<br \/>\nperspective, in spite of all the various permutations and things<br \/>\nwe add and do differently, the journalism we produce and the core<br \/>\nof what we do in the sense aiming to be first on breaking news has<br \/>\nbeen remarkably consistent in recent years. That\u2019s been one of<br \/>\nthe most challenging things, but also when it works, the most<br \/>\nrewarding.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where do you get your news?<\/strong><br \/>\nI\u2019m on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jackie_deals\">Twitter<\/a> a lot. I tweet a lot of our stories and I also retweet stories from our competition where I think they\u2019re doing exceptional or insightful work.<\/p>\n<p>I have to read the papers of the competition every day to<br \/>\nsee what they\u2019re digging into. I like a physical newspaper. I<br \/>\nread The New York Times a lot online. I also like watching news<br \/>\ntelevision.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What will you miss most about Paris?<\/strong><br \/>\nThe people in Paris overall. Some of the people in my group<br \/>\nare really just fantastic. I hope I can promote them even more and<br \/>\nhelp them in a different way.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s Paris. You know, the Eiffel Tower. (LAUGH) The<br \/>\nrelative calmness compared to London. Speaking French. I\u2019ll miss<br \/>\nthat. I mean, I\u2019ll miss a lot of things. But it\u2019s not far away.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Are you excited for London?<\/strong><br \/>\nOutside of Bloomberg I\u2019m looking forward to taking<br \/>\nadvantage of London\u2019s alternative culture. You know, it\u2019s much<br \/>\nmore culturally diverse. There\u2019s more of an international feel<br \/>\nthat you don\u2019t really get on the continent. Certainly not in<br \/>\nParis.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What&#8217;s the future of Bloomberg News?<\/strong><br \/>\nThe potential of this place is phenomenal. And &#8212; you know,<br \/>\nI would think and hope that the direction we\u2019re moving is to<br \/>\ncapture a lot of that potential. We can do that through<br \/>\ncollaboration. We should talk across groups and regions more &#8212;<br \/>\nit\u2019s really going to come from cross-platform collaboration and<br \/>\nteamwork.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m a little competitive. We need to get behind the scenes<br \/>\nand break exclusives and knock everyone out of the water.<\/p>\n<p>-Monica Bertran
