Every year in June, the Friends of Steve McQueen enthusiast group holds a car show. This is the first year it has held a road rally beforehand—and what a trip it was. Dozens of vintage Porsches, Alfa Romeos, and other classics covered 70 miles along Southern California’s most picturesque roads, all to benefit the school for wayward boys that McQueen had attended as a youth.

At the rally, an owner lovingly applies a Steve McQueen decal to a 1970 Porsche 911S coupe. Dozens of cars (including many of McQueen's favored Porsches) participated in the two-day drive from Malibu to Santa Barbara. Hundreds of people will attend the show June 4 in Chino Hills, Calif.

A 1958 Porsche Speedster owned by Cheryl Dunkel and Peter Dunkel (not pictured) is prepared for the event. Porsche made the first Speedster in 1948, and it quickly became popular over the next decade. Early models cost less than $3,000.

Another non-Porsche, or two: An orange 1970 Plymouth Barracuda convertible drives just ahead of a 1970 Plymouth 'Cuda hardtop during the rally. The redesign of 1970 proved the biggest year for that car, when it made both a coupe and convertible version. Production ended by 1975.

A 1970 Plymouth ’Cuda hardtop arrives at the Fess Parker hotel during the rally. For years before his death in 1980, McQueen gave money and time to the Boys Republic school, which was founded nearly a century ago and which now assists girls as well as boys who otherwise could be facing jail sentences.

Driver Gareth Ashworth and passenger in a 1965 Alfa Romeo GTA during the rally. The racing Alfas were produced from 1965 to 1971. During early years they won multiple victories at the famous Autodromo Nazionale Monza racetrack near Milan, Italy.
