Q&A 26 October 2017

Bloomberg’s research arm, Bloomberg Intelligence (BI), provides in-depth analysis and data sets on industries, companies and credit, government, economic and litigation factors that impact decision-making. We sat down with Matthew to discuss his role and responsibilities on the BI team.

What does your role on the Bloomberg Intelligence (BI) team, and what does the position entail?
I am an analyst for the software team, covering application, entertainment and infrastructure software companies and the entertainment software industry as a whole. My position requires me to provide timely, consistent insights at an industry level and on key companies by leveraging Bloomberg’s comprehensive datasets with analysis on key fundamentals and thematic trends.

What previous academic or professional experience prepared you for your current position?

I have a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the Stephen M Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan and have passed all three levels of the CFA.

What kind of research have you been doing since the beginning of the year?

The entertainment software industry continues to grow at a solid rate, driven by the continued expansion of mobile game sales and modest increases in console and PC games. E-sports, or competitive video gaming, is a small, nascent segment of the industry that is garnering lots of attention and is something on which we have published extensively. The industry remains healthy, with the largest companies continuing to capture a greater share of revenue and profits, driving development of even more advanced, in-depth new games that continues to raise the bar for the competition.

What are the top trends in entertainment, application and infrastructure software?
The top trend in application and infrastructure software continues to be the shift to the cloud and how this is disrupting legacy incumbent software vendors and opening opportunities for pure-play, cloud-first upstarts. Hardware continues to be commoditized by software, leading many legacy tech companies to acquire software rivals, a trend that is likely to continue. A strong backdrop for global growth supports software expansion globally. For entertainment software, rising spending on video games, the growth of mobile gaming, e-sports and virtual and augmented reality remain key themes.
