Hong Kong, June 15, 2016

The Society of Publishers in Asia (SOPA) presented three awards to Bloomberg for outstanding regional journalism at its annual SOPA Awards for Editorial Excellence. Bloomberg’s honorees were selected in three categories:

Excellence in Reporting on the Environment
Archana Chaudhary, Rajesh Kumar Singh and Chris Brummitt won for environmental reporting for their work, Farmers Driven From Homes `Like Pests’ by Dam Projects.
“From Indonesia to India, on-the-ground reporting shows how dams are bringing energy even as they overwhelm traditional communities…” said the judges.
Excellence in Reporting on Women’s Issues
In the category of Excellence in Reporting on Women’s Issues, SOPA awarded an honorable mention to both Kamran Haider and Khurrum Anis for their work on,  “Wife on Run From Pakistan Honor Killing Says No One Can Escape.

Commenting on this piece, the judges said,

“This story required brave investigative reporting in situations of real danger.”

Excellence in Opinion Writing
Pankaj Mishra won for Excellence in Opinion Writing for various columns, including “Real Roots of Islamic State Don’t Lie in Religion.”
Commenting on the award, the judges said,
“Mishra’s columns seek to shed light on a complicated topic which is all too often written from a Western point of view… He has a rare talent for putting his observations in an historical setting with a high level approach to writing which demands the reader think more closely of the issues rather than giving simplistic answers.”
