News 4 May 2016

“This election cycle has been an amazing turn of events–even reporters are stunned.”

Craig Gordon – Managing Editor, Bloomberg Washington News

On May 4, Bloomberg Politics’ General Manager Tanya Singer and Bloomberg Washington News’ Managing Editor Craig Gordon hosted an exclusive look at how reporting on the presidential race has changed in 2016. Bloomberg Politics has been able to carve an innovative editorial path combining multi-platform reporting with Bloomberg’s global reach, live video and exclusive data.

Adopting a “right platform at the right time” strategy, Bloomberg Politics serves users wherever they are with the most relevant news.  This involves considerable preparation, editorial resources and nimbleness.

For example, Bloomberg’s ability to deliver news along with analysis and data, has enabled it to dominate political coverage and to provide reporting seconds after the news breaks. According to Gordon, this fast, non-partisan reporting is not only fundamental to Bloomberg News, but is also what audiences want to consume.

“Everyone can now look at the numbers – all readers can have access to the raw data. This is a new development – people want the facts and to make up their own minds.”

One major development leading up to the 2016 election has been the national focus on delegates. To address this, Bloomberg Politics created the Delegate Tracker, a data-driven resource allowing readers to quickly see how each candidate locked up nominations. The visualization became a popular resource, with many readers discovering it via web search as they tried to understand why delegates became so important and who was leading.
