Bloomberg has developed a mapping tool to help track the outbreak of\u00a0Covid-19, the illness caused by the coronavirus, and better understand\u00a0companies\u2019 exposures to the virus. The feature has been built on top of\u00a0Bloomberg\u2019s MAP GO solution, available on its flagship terminal.<\/p>\n

MAP VIRUS was first launched on January 29, at which point there were\u00a0more than 7,700 recorded cases of infection and more than 170 deaths\u00a0reported in China alone. Since then, Bloomberg has released several\u00a0iterations of its mapping tool, with the most recent rolled out on April 6,\u00a0providing regional views of the outbreak in the US and mainland China.<\/p>\n

The research platform is targeted at analysts to help them quantify the\u00a0impact of the virus and derive insights that they can then pass on to portfolio\u00a0managers or traders.<\/p>\n

MAP VIRUS pulls in data from Johns Hopkins University, a global standard\u00a0source on the coronavirus, which updates its information from government\u00a0agencies such as the World Health Organization, the US Center for Disease\u00a0Control and Prevention, and the National Health Council. Bloomberg\u2019s tool\u00a0also sources data from news organizations, MAP GO\u2019s database, third-party\u00a0providers, government websites, public company information, and newly\u00a0created datasets specific to the virus, typically derived using crowdsourcing\u00a0techniques like manually analyzing documents. Additionally, MAP\u00a0VIRUS leverages Bloomberg\u2019s global newsroom, taking in live feeds from\u00a0news reports.<\/p>\n

All the datasets are brought together on the platform and visualized using a\u00a0world map, charting tools and tabular grids.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhether it\u2019s at Bloomberg or other places, we\u2019re able to bring in [and\u00a0visualize] datasets that, in any other context outside of location, have no\u00a0correlation to one another. But within the map you can see those\u00a0correlations and those overlaps, and you can start to understand the\u00a0situation or plan for a decision much better,\u201d says Bobby Shackelton, head\u00a0of geospatial applications at Bloomberg.<\/p>\n

Shackelton joined the data company five years ago, leading the builds of\u00a0MAP GO and the virus tracking tool.<\/p>\n

On the platform, users can search for specific companies or groups of\u00a0companies, pulling up information on their physical assets (such\u00a0as factories, workforce, and supply chains), a curated list of coronavirus-related\u00a0news mentioning that firm or industry, market performance and\u00a0indexes data.<\/p>\n

For example, an analyst could measure a company\u2019s exposure by looking at\u00a0the impact on its supply chain if a large proportion of its factories and\u00a0workforce is located on mainland China, the source of the outbreak, and\u00a0where economic and social lockdown was first implemented.<\/p>\n

Users also have the option to filter the data by layering on alternative\u00a0datasets like airline information or maritime movements. There is the\u00a0capability to conduct time series analyses, as the tool includes the full\u00a0history of the coronavirus outbreak. Analysts can click on a specific date in\u00a0the time series to view the statistics from that day, which is then reflected in\u00a0the map view.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve connected the map and chart to create a kind of an immersive\u00a0experience where the map can drive the chart and the chart can drive the\u00a0map. You can replay the chart and the map at the same time to animate the\u00a0outbreak and the course of action,\u201d Shackelton says.<\/p>\n

Trouble Was Brewing<\/b><\/p>\n

Plans for the Covid-19 tool emerged in early January, following a tip-off from\u00a0some of Bloomberg\u2019s data analysts in China. They suggested that the MAP\u00a0GO team get ahead of the outbreak, as \u201cthings started to brew and become\u00a0an issue in China\u201d, Shackelton says. A week later, by mid-January, they had\u00a0developed the first iteration of MAP VIRUS.<\/p>\n

Since then, the team has built five or six versions of the tool based on client\u00a0feedback. As the pandemic unfolded, users asked for additional functionality,\u00a0including time series analysis, more data variables (for example, not only\u00a0cases, but deaths, recoveries, net changes day over day), and daily analysis\u00a0of how the market was reacting to updates on the virus.<\/p>\n

Shackelton says the team is continually building out the solution to providemore granular data. The next versions aim to offer more country-specific\u00a0data as the rates of infection spike and flatten in different regions, and\u00a0especially as China begins to ease its lockdown measures and\u00a0manufacturing restrictions.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe approach is to become more granular and detailed as this [virus]\u00a0continues to develop, because it\u2019s going from a macro event to a more\u00a0localized event every day,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n

The first quarter of 2020 has seen the greatest recorded usage of MAP GO\u00a0since its launch in 2016, with a 300% increase since the beginning of the\u00a0outbreak.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n\t\t\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
