Far-reaching concerns like gender equality, education, and access to markets affect men and women alike at work, home, and in our communities. That\u2019s why Bloomberg is amplifying its support of International Women\u2019s Day by hosting 60 events in 20 cities, up from 20 events in 11 cities over last year.<\/p>\n<p>International Women\u2019s Day (IWD), now an official holiday in 25-plus countries from Afghanistan to Zambia, began in the early 1900s as a way to draw attention to men and women fighting women\u2019s political oppression and inequality. More than a century later those issues stubbornly remain, while new causes, such as pay inequality and domestic violence, have been added to the movement. March 8 marks the annual recognition of IWD and Bloomberg employees globally are participating in a range of supporting events and activities.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/88671054?title=0&amp;byline=0&amp;portrait=0&amp;color=ffffff\" width=\"595\" height=\"335\" frameborder=\"0\" webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen allowfullscreen><\/iframe><br \/>\n&#8220;Everyone faces similar challenges, from career development to personal decisions regarding &#8216;having it all,&#8217;&#8221; says Sheri Finkelstein of the Women&#8217;s Community in New York, one of Bloomberg&#8217;s 12 women&#8217;s groups. &#8220;Women continue to enter the workforce in significant numbers and finding satisfaction in their jobs while balancing personal obligations is a priority for many.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Since our years as a start-up, women have had a critical role in making Bloomberg a success. IWD presents an opportunity for Bloomberg to reinforce its dedication to making a difference in the lives of girls and women through community building, advocacy, and philanthropic efforts. The prosperity of our company \u2013 and our communities \u2013 is enhanced when our employees embrace this social responsibility.<\/p>\n<p>Developing a culture in which women can excel and inspire takes a concerted effort led by several groups. This month, the Diversity and Inclusion team is partnering with Engagement and Philanthropy to sponsor events across 20 cities. &#8220;Through IWD activities, we hope to promote an understanding of current issues women face in our offices and raise awareness of the support Bloomberg provides women,&#8221; says Tehani Perera.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14965\" style=\"width: 602px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/data.bloomberglp.com\/company\/sites\/2\/2014\/03\/iwd2014tokyo-panel_0858-592x394.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"iwd2014tokyo panel_0858\" width=\"592\" height=\"394\" class=\"size-large wp-image-14965 overlay\" srcset=\"https:\/\/data.bloomberglp.com\/company\/sites\/2\/2014\/03\/iwd2014tokyo-panel_0858.jpg 592w, https:\/\/data.bloomberglp.com\/company\/sites\/2\/2014\/03\/iwd2014tokyo-panel_0858.jpg 290w, https:\/\/data.bloomberglp.com\/company\/sites\/2\/2014\/03\/iwd2014tokyo-panel_0858.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/data.bloomberglp.com\/company\/sites\/2\/2014\/03\/iwd2014tokyo-panel_0858.jpg 1440w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 592px) 100vw, 592px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">In conjunction with International Women&#8217;s Day, the Bloomberg Tokyo office hosted &#8220;Lessons from Ghana to Norway,&#8221; a discussion that explored the theme of pursuing gender equality.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Guest speakers, mentoring and networking activities, volunteer and donation opportunities, and film screenings are all part of the itinerary for Bloomberg\u2019s IWD celebrations. &#8220;These events create a platform that motivates us, whether it&#8217;s helping aspiring engineering students create their first r\u00e9sum\u00e9 or drawing inspiration from outstanding women leaders addressing our employees,&#8221; says Global Engagement and Philanthropy manager Nanette Smith.<\/p>\n<p>Event highlights include Lunch and Learns in New York featuring Intel president Renee James, Bloomberg News senior executive editor Laurie Hays, and Verna Eggleston from Bloomberg Philanthropies. In Sao Paulo, Maite Leite, Latin American regional Chief Operating Officer for Deutsche Bank, will address employees while in Cape Town author Margie Orford will make an appearance. In London, colleagues will have access to networking and performances at the Women of the World Festival.
