Our founder and CEO Mike Bloomberg has long been committed to protecting the environment as an investment in our communities, our children\u2019s future and our business. That ethos is embodied by the thousands of Bloomberg employees who devote their time to causes that create a cleaner and healthier planet.<\/p>\n

We celebrate Earth Day with this edition of Bloomberg 35<\/em> by featuring some of our environmental non-profit partners and our work together to renew and protect our planet for the future.<\/p>\n

Royal Botanic Garden Sydney<\/strong>
\nIt is estimated that up to 50% of the world\u2019s plant species face extinction. Through seed collection, seed banking, discovery of new plant species, and science and conservation research and training, Royal Botanic Garden Sydney<\/a> scientists are working towards global targets to preserve precious biodiversity and ensure our future.<\/p>\n

This year, Bloomberg employees are volunteering with the Gardens\u2019 Community Greening<\/a> program across New South Wales. This initiative leverages the Gardens\u2019 horticultural expertise to build sustainable, vegetable gardens as a way to revitalize communities of those in most need, including aboriginal groups and disadvantaged youths. This program won the Community Program of the Year<\/a> at the Parks & Leisure Australia National Awards of Excellence 2017.<\/p>\n

The communal gardens are in subsidized housing neighborhoods to inspire residents with a sense of achievement, belonging and connectedness, resulting in improved social unity and public health in these communities.<\/p>\n

\"Bloomberg<\/a><\/p>\n

Bloomberg has supported the Royal Botanic Gardens and Domain Trust since 2008. This year, our employees are volunteering alongside local residents for the Community Greening projects, exchanging life stories and building communal gardens together.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI was drawn to the Royal Botanic Gardens because of how they empowered people with a sense of purpose and pride. Their work in reviving neglected outdoor spaces, especially in urban areas, brings people together. We worked side-by-side with the residents of the community we\u2019re serving; it was so rewarding to get to know them and see their commitment in caring for the gardens.\u201d \u2013 Andreea Papuc, Sydney News<\/em><\/p>\n

Donguri No Kai<\/strong>
\nNearly 70% of Japan\u2019s land area is covered by forests, yet 80% of these forests are in need of urgent care. Donguri No Kai<\/a> is an organization committed to protecting and restoring neglected forests throughout Japan, to preserve the natural wildlife in communities.<\/p>\n

Bloomberg has supported Donguri No Kai since 2008. Our employees volunteer with friends and family to plant trees and seedlings in mountains across Japan, four times each year. This year, 145 employees have already taken up on this venture.<\/p>\n

\"To<\/a><\/p>\n

To celebrate Bloomberg\u2019s 30th year in Japan, 100 employees and their families travelled to Mount Fuji, a World Heritage Site listed by UNESCO, to plant trees and restore the ecosystem of this culturally significant site.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Clean Ocean Action<\/strong>
\nLitter and debris in beaches are detrimental to tourism and local economies, but also the marine wildlife and environment. Clean Ocean Action<\/a> (COA) is a national and New York\/New Jersey regional voice in protecting waterways through research, public education, law and citizen action.<\/p>\n

Since 2011, Bloomberg has supported COA with more than 300 Bloomberg employees contributing over 1,500 volunteer hours. Employees have volunteered in 27 COA beach clean-ups at coastal locations throughout New York and New Jersey, cleaning beaches and recording data on the debris and litter removed.<\/p>\n

\"Employees<\/a><\/p>\n

Employees in our Global Data group took the volunteer partnership to another level. They utilized their data systems expertise to build a database for COA to better organize and manage all their beach debris data. We recently held a hackathon with Columbia University Data Science students to analyze and interpret trends in COA\u2019s data.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cOne of the most rewarding experiences from my involvement the past two years was presenting our team’s app development and data findings at COA’s Debris Free Sea Conference. I met COA beach cleanup volunteers from other organizations who shared how beneficial our COA data management work was for them \u2013 and for future COA volunteers.\u201d \u2013 Michael Campellone, Bloomberg Intelligence, New York<\/em><\/p>\n

Through Mike Bloomberg\u2019s leadership, our company culture and the work of Bloomberg Philanthropies<\/a>, we are proud of our collective integration of sustainability through our product, people and philanthropy.
