What will it take for the next generation of students to succeed in the global economy? If you ask a Bloomberg employee, they\u2019ll tell you that there is no one route to success. Whatever the student may be interested in or passionate about \u2014 Bloomberg employees around the world are committed to mentoring students in their local communities and using education as a \u201cgreat equalizer\u201d in eliminating socio-economic disparity.<\/p>\n

In this edition of Bloomberg 35, we highlight how Bloomberg collaborates with non-profit education partners and how our employees use their diverse skillsets to help students around the world learn and discover their passion.<\/p>\n

FIRST<\/em><\/strong> Robotics<\/strong>
\nBloomberg began sponsoring FIRST<\/em> programs in 2004. FIRST<\/em><\/a> (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), founded by renowned inventor Dean Kamen, challenges high school students to build and design robots for a global competition while providing them the opportunity to pursue science and technology as a viable career path.<\/p>\n

Bloomberg currently sponsors 500 high school students<\/a> across 15 FIRST<\/em> Robotics and 3 FIRST<\/em> Tech Challenge teams in New York City, Trenton, San Francisco and London. Bloomberg employees serve as mentors to these high school teams throughout the season \u2013 and in New York and Tokyo, employees are mentoring middle school students on FIRST<\/em> Lego League teams.<\/p>\n

This year, eight Bloomberg-sponsored FIRST Robotics teams qualified for and competed in the 2017 FIRST Championship in St. Louis \u2014 representing our largest group of sponsored teams at the world championships to date.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cBeing a FIRST<\/em> Robotics mentor allows me to share with students the knowledge and critical thinking skills required to be a successful software engineer. In addition, it helps open the students\u2019 minds to push past their limits to build an amazing robot from scratch \u2013 but more importantly, that they have the ability to accomplish anything they set their minds to.\u201d -Joseph Corbisiero, New York Engineering<\/em><\/p>\n

JA Worldwide<\/strong>
\nAs one of the world\u2019s largest youth-serving NGOs, Junior Achievement (JA) Worldwide<\/a> activates youth for the future of jobs. Through the delivery of cutting-edge, experiential learning in financial literacy, work readiness, and entrepreneurship, JA creates pathways for employability and job creation.\u00a0Each year, the JA network of over 470,000 volunteers serves more than 10 million students in over 100 countries.<\/p>\n

Bloomberg\u2019s partnership with JA started in Hong Kong in 2012, working with teenagers to build their entrepreneurial spirit and providing job-readiness training through the Bloomberg Startup education engagement program. Today, Bloomberg partners with JA in nearly 20 cities around the world.<\/p>\n

Throughout the year, Bloomberg offices host job shadow days and workshops to prepare high school students with professional skills. Bloomberg employees engage students in team building exercises, sharing their experience in interviews and identifying their strengths.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cAs an alumna of Junior Achievement, it\u2019s amazing to have the opportunity to give back to a program that I myself benefitted from as a teenager. Inner City Scholarship Fund<\/strong>
\nInner City Scholarship Fund<\/a> (Inner-City) helps families gift their children with elementary and secondary education in New York City inner-city Catholic schools, regardless of their faith or financial background. Bloomberg has supported Inner-City since 1994, making it one of the company\u2019s longest standing partnerships.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

By supporting students through the non-profit\u2019s signature sponsorship programs, Be a Student\u2019s Friend<\/em> and Kids are Our Capital<\/em>, Bloomberg has provided opportunities for countless students. Over the years, numerous students from Inner-City have interned at Bloomberg and employees have provided their own support in donations and through Bloomberg corporate giving initiatives.<\/p>\n

Cidad\u00e3o Pr\u00f3-Mundo<\/strong>
\nIn Brazil, learning English is often seen as a tool to promote social mobility. Cidad\u00e3o Pr\u00f3-Mundo<\/a> partners with local schools and volunteers to teach English to disadvantaged youth with an aim that all young people will have the same opportunities no matter their socioeconomic background.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Bloomberg employees have been volunteering as English teachers at Cidad\u00e3o Pr\u00f3-Mundo for the past five years. Every Saturday, Bloomberg \u201cvolunteachers\u201d visit a public school to teach 20 students of all ages determined to learn English as a way of becoming \u201cPro-World Citizens.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since 2013, Bloomberg employees in S\u00e3o Paulo have donated 2,000 volunteer hours to providing English lessons and empowering young people in Brazil.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
