This year, the conference theme is \u201cData Science for the SDGs\u201d or how data scientists, corporations, policymakers, and researchers can collaborate on data science projects that will move us toward achieving the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UN\u2019s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)<\/a> by 2030. These 17 goals are structured around the five pillars of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/ga\/search\/view_doc.asp?symbol=A\/RES\/70\/1&amp;Lang=E\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development<\/a> \u2013 People, Peace, Prosperity, Planet and Partnership \u2013 which were adopted by all UN Member States at the historic UN Sustainable Development Summit in September 2015.<\/p>\n<p>In this first of 4 articles previewing this year\u2019s conference, we take a look at the panels, workshops and presentations in the conference\u2019s People Track. The conference sessions in this track will tackle some or all of the following SDGs:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/poverty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Sustainable Development Goal 1<\/strong><\/a><strong>: End poverty in all its forms everywhere<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/hunger\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Sustainable Development Goal 2<\/strong><\/a><strong>: Zero Hunger<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Sustainable Development Goal 3<\/strong><\/a><strong>:<\/strong> <strong>Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Sustainable Development Goal 4<\/strong><\/a><strong>: Quality Education<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/sustainabledevelopment.un.org\/sdg5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Sustainable Development Goal 5<\/strong><\/a><strong>: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<\/div>\n<h3><strong><em>We are determined to end poverty and hunger, in all their forms and dimensions, and to ensure that all human beings can fulfil their potential in dignity and equality and in a healthy environment.<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n<div class=\"bb-separator\" data-color=\"\">\n\t<hr class=\"bb-separator__rule\">\n<\/div>\n<div class='bb-wysiwyg'>\n    \n    <p><strong>10-10:45 AM<br \/>\nPanel #1: From information to insight to impact: cross-sector approaches to data science for gender equality (SDG5 and beyond)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Gender equality is a broad and complex issue that is relevant to the vast majority of the SDGs, as well as the sole focus of <a href=\"https:\/\/sustainabledevelopment.un.org\/sdg5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Sustainable Development Goal 5<\/strong><\/a>. Ensuring greater gender equality will also help us make progress towards many of the other SDGs. Research and evidence show, for example, that women\u2019s empowerment helps ensure progress on a wide range of other development outcomes including economic growth, health, nutrition, education, as well as environmental protection and peace and stability. Given the breadth of gender equality challenges \u2013 and the multiplier effects linked with increasing women\u2019s empowerment \u2013 data science approaches aimed at improving gender equality must also be broad, cross-sector, and connect the local, national, and global levels.<\/p>\n<p>This panel will look at how data science is helping to illuminate the system-level or macro picture for gender equality policies across 129 countries around the globe, with data from the <a href=\"https:\/\/data.em2030.org\/em2030-sdg-gender-index\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2019 SDG Gender Index<\/a>. Panelists from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.equalmeasures2030.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Equal Measures 2030 (EM2030)<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unwomen.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UN Women<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/data2x.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Data2X<\/a> , and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tableau.com\/foundation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tableau Foundation<\/a> will touch on different elements of the data value chain as it pertains to gender equality, from designing data collection to using data visualization for decision making and advocacy.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n<div class='bb-wysiwyg'>\n    \n    <p><strong>11:00 AM-12:00 PM<br \/>\nPaper Presentations, Session A<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Using big data to support public space research (presented by Avigail Vantu and Kristen Day)<\/li>\n<li>How data governance technologies can democratize data sharing (presented by Daniel Wu and Kelsey Finch)<\/li>\n<li>Associating ridesourcing with road safety outcomes: Insights from Austin, Texas (presented by Eleftheria Kontou and Noreen McDonald)<\/li>\n<li>A case study for the effectiveness of machine learning for reducing lead service line replacement costs in Flint, Michigan (presented by Jared Webb, Jacob Abernethy and Eric Schwartz)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<\/div>\n<div class='bb-wysiwyg'>\n    \n    <p><strong>12:15-1:00 PM<br \/>\nData for Good Exchange Immersion Fellows&#8217; Presentation: Love City Strong US Virgin Islands (USVI) &amp; City of Houston, Texas<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n<div class='bb-wysiwyg'>\n    \n    <p><strong>2:00-2:45 PM<br \/>\nPanel #2: Data for Good 2030: Creating Sustained Capacity<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At last year\u2019s Data for Good Exchange conference, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.datakind.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DataKind<\/a> ran the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techatbloomberg.com\/blog\/building-future-data-good-2025-workshop-data-good-exchange-2018\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;Data for Good 2025&#8221; Workshop<\/a>. This session encouraged people from multiple sectors to work together to determine which big challenges still existed for the Data for Good movement and attempted to chart a path toward a vision of Data for Good ten years out. Since then, they have received a lot of great thinking and return this year with a report back to the community and a call to action.<\/p>\n<p>During this lively, interactive session moderated by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rockefellerfoundation.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Rockefeller Foundation<\/a>, panelists from DataKind, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newamerica.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New America<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">City of New York<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/digital-cooperation-panel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UN Secretary-General\u2019s High Level Panel on Digital Cooperation<\/a> will propose a cohesive vision for Data for Good 2030. They\u2019ll focus primarily on what it will take to not just create more Data for Good projects, but also to provide dramatic increases to data science and AI capacity in the space writ large. They\u2019ll be tackling this conversation from the perspective of large NGOs, international organizations, foundations, and corporations, looking at what part each can all play in creating sustained capacity for data science and AI toward a better world.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n<div class='bb-wysiwyg'>\n    \n    <p><strong>3:00-4:00 PM<br \/>\nWorkshop: Enabling Responsible Data Ecosystems to Use Data for Social Good <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rockefellerfoundation.org\/about-us\/news-media\/mastercard-rockefeller-foundation-announce-data-science-social-impact-initial-50-million-commitment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth and The Rockefeller Foundation announced a $50M \u2018Data Science for Social Impact\u2019 collaborative<\/a> to accelerate the use of data science by empowering non-profit, civic and government organizations with the tools, expertise and other capabilities they need to help solve the world\u2019s most pressing challenges. Now working together with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oecd.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)<\/a> and others, this group is creating principles and practices to build data science capacity for those working on the front lines of social change.<\/p>\n<p>Under the umbrella of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), this workshop, which will be led by representatives from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mastercard.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mastercard<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rockefellerfoundation.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Rockefeller Foundation<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegovlab.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Governance Lab (GovLab)<\/a>, will take participants through the design elements for enabling responsible data ecosystems to use data for social good. Participants will leave with an understanding of the unique roles various ecosystem actors play\u2014data users, data suppliers, civil society, academics, and data scientists, among others\u2014in driving the data-for-social-good process.
