At Bloomberg, we believe in contributing back to the community. In data science, we contribute back by sponsoring conferences, meetups, publishing our findings in conferences and journals, and contributing code to open source libraries<\/a>. In addition to these efforts, we support academic research through meaningful engagement with university faculty and Ph.D. candidates. To this end, Bloomberg has established two grant programs<\/a> which provide funding for academic research, as well as enable faculty and Ph.D. candidates to collaborate with Bloomberg’s data scientists.<\/p>\n

Bloomberg has traditionally supported cutting-edge research in broadly-construed data science, including natural language processing (NLP), information retrieval, machine learning, and data mining, through its Data Science Research Grant Program, which has been in existence since 2015.<\/p>\n

Today, the company has announced the Call for Proposals for the 2018 Bloomberg Data Science Research Grant Program<\/a>, inviting academic researchers worldwide to apply for unrestricted gifts that either support research in data science or the creation of, or contributions to, open source software used for data science. Applications must be submitted by March 15, 2018. Grant decisions will be communicated by May 15, 2018.<\/p>\n

This year, Bloomberg is also launching its inaugural Data Science Ph.D. Fellowship. The goal of this fellowship is to provide Ph.D. students working in broadly-construed data science with support and encouragement of ground-breaking publications in both academic journals and conference proceedings.<\/p>\n

The company invites exceptional Ph.D. students working in NLP, machine learning, and artificial intelligence to apply now for the Bloomberg Data Science Ph.D. Fellowship<\/a> for the 2018-2019 academic year. Applications must be submitted by March 15, 2018. Fellowship recipients will be announced by May 15, 2018.<\/p>\n
