Now celebrated in more than 130 countries on May 17, this day aims to convene international events that help raise awareness of LGBTI rights violations and improve the profile of LGBTI rights worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>In Asia, progress has traditionally been slow with regards to the inclusion and recognition of human rights for LGBTI individuals and communities, especially in the workplace. According to a landmark review conducted by USAID and UNDP between 2012 and 2014, LGBTI in Asia faces significant challenges from unsupportive policy environments, as well as high levels of stigma or discrimination at work.<\/p>\n<p>However, there has been steady progress in the past year on both policy and business fronts. Here are a few highlights:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Taiwan became the first place in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage in May 2017.<\/li>\n<li>In Japan, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.japantimes.co.jp\/news\/2018\/04\/02\/national\/fukuoka-begins-official-recognition-lgbt-partnerships\/#.WxYVA-6FMUE\">Fukuoka became the seventh municipality<\/a> in the country to allow partnerships of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender couples.<\/li>\n<li>Hong Kong will host the Gay Games \u2013 an Olympic-style sporting event \u2013 in 2022, despite it being the first host city that does not legally recognize same-sex partnerships.<\/li>\n<li>In Australia, Bloomberg illuminated its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/company\/careers\/global-roles\/working-at-bloomberg-in-sydney\/\">Sydney office building<\/a> in rainbow colors on May 17 to celebrate IDAHOBIT.<\/li>\n<li>Also in Australia, the leading LGBTI health organization, ACON, recognized corporate leaders at its 2018 Australian Workplace Equality Index (AWEI) and Awards \u2013 now in its 9<sup>th<\/sup><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When looked at in totality, this progress encourages global companies to create more LGBTI-inclusive workplaces. And in return, companies are seeing measurable benefits, proving that inclusive workplaces truly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/~\/media\/mckinsey\/business%20functions\/organization\/our%20insights\/delivering%20through%20diversity\/delivering-through-diversity_full-report.ashx\">drive better business performance<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn many countries across Asia Pacific, the LGBTI community still lacks recognition and basic protections,\u201d said Hayden Majajas, Head of Diversity &amp; Inclusion for APAC at Bloomberg. \u201cThat said, companies have the power \u2013 and responsibility \u2013 to ensure their anti-discrimination, anti-harassment policies specifically address sexual orientation and gender expression.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_35292\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" style=\"width: 1034px;\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/data.bloomberglp.com\/company\/sites\/4\/2018\/06\/IDAHOTB_008.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-35292 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/data.bloomberglp.com\/company\/sites\/4\/2018\/06\/IDAHOTB_008-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>The rooftop of the Bloomberg office in Sydney is illuminated in celebration of the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHOT).<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Corporate diversity and inclusion initiatives born in Asia have proven to deliver significant progress globally. Bloomberg\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloombergmedia.com\/blog\/raising-womens-voices\/\">Diverse Voices initiative<\/a>, for example, was first launched in Asia before rolling out to its newsrooms globally. This has helped to drive more meaningful and representative conversations in the industry, ensuring fairness and balance in all forms of its content.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, increasing investor demand is driving more companies to disclose data around their social and governance metrics. Bloomberg recently opened submissions for its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/company\/announcements\/2019-gender-equality-index-gives-companies-chance-prove-commitment-gender-equality-investors\/\">2019 Gender-Equality Index (GEI)<\/a>, which highlights companies\u2019 commitments to an equitable workplace and community globally. In the 2018 index, Japan and Australia had the third and fourth highest number of companies listed respectively, while firms headquartered in Singapore and Taiwan were included for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAsia\u2019s progress is encouraging, but more still needs to be done to advance all types of diversity and inclusion in the workplace,\u201d added Majajas. \u201cThe theme of this year\u2019s IDAHOT \u2013 \u2018Alliances for Solidarity\u2019 \u2013 also speaks to the significance of intersectionality across different communities and groups.
