Innovations in sustainability are at the heart of Bloomberg\u2019s office designs, from engineering to construction to building operations. But our new European headquarters in London is our greatest achievement in sustainability yet \u2014 in fact, it\u2019s one of the world\u2019s most sustainable office buildings. It scored a 98.5 percent BREEAM sustainability rating, among the highest design-stage scores of any major office development.<\/p>\n

This project was a great opportunity to build an office that will maximize the well-being of our employees while minimizing the company\u2019s environmental footprint. Where sustainable technologies didn\u2019t exist, we invented them \u2013 collaborating with experts around the world to source, test, and manufacture new materials and designs.<\/p>\n

Here are five of our favorite eco-friendly features at our new European headquarters.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n

1. Integrated Petal-design Ceiling<\/h2>\n\n<\/div>\n

Our innovative ceiling panels feature 2.5 million polished aluminum \u201cpetals\u201d that save energy by improving the efficiency of heating, cooling and lighting functions. Incorporating\u00a0 0.5 million LED lights, the ceiling \u00a0uses 40% less energy than a typical fluorescent office lighting system. Its unique petal design also helps manage acoustics and airflow.<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n

2. Natural Ventilation<\/h2>\n\n<\/div>\n

When the outside air temperature is suitable, we can turn off our mechanical ventilation system, open the custom bronze blades shading the building\u2019s interiors and cool the building with naturally flowing air. This significantly reduces energy consumption.<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n

3. Smart Airflow<\/h2>\n\n<\/div>\n

When the building is in natural ventilation mode, is drawn up through the building\u2019s six-storey ramp and out through vents in the roof. Sensors also allow us to adjust indoor airflow in response to how many people are in the building, which will save 600-750 MWh of power per year.<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n

4. Water Conservation<\/h2>\n\n<\/div>\n

The building is 70% more water-efficient than a typical office building. An on-site water treatment plant allows us to collect and reuse rainwater from the roof, as well as \u201cgrey water\u201d from sinks, saving 25 million liters of water a year. Recycled water feeds our airline-style vacuum-flush toilets, which use net zero mains water.<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n

The high-ceiling pantry is a great space for meetings with colleagues and clients. It overlooks St. Paul\u2019s Cathedral and is flooded with natural light from the atrium above \u2014 making it a perfect space for our \u201cliving wall.\u201d<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n\t\t\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
