As Bloomberg\u2019s Chief Technology Officer, Shawn Edwards is responsible for setting the company\u2019s technology direction and developing innovative new products. He leads a team of brilliant researchers, technologists, and product managers across diverse domains who drive ideas from research through prototyping, product development, and large-scale production deployment.<\/p>\n

Shawn\u2019s team consists of hands-on researchers who collaborate with Bloomberg’s Engineering department, the open source community, and academia. They focus on strategic areas that are critical for the company\u2019s growth and stability \u2013 AI Strategy and Research, Data and Analytics, Quantitative Financial Research, as well as Compute, Network, and Information Security Infrastructure. The department has led the company’s most significant technology changes over the last 18 years.<\/p>\n

The CTO Office also acts as product managers of Bloomberg\u2019s most advanced products. This includes ASKB, a powerful conversational and agentic AI system that is redefining the Bloomberg Terminal, BQuant, the company\u2019s suite of advanced data science solutions designed specifically for financial markets, and Bloomberg Query Language (BQL), an advanced data and analytics query language.<\/p>\n

Shawn leads the company\u2019s engagement with the broader developer community and academia, through research fellowships, grants, and sponsorships. He also oversees Bloomberg\u2019s Open Source Program Office (OSPO), which directs the firm\u2019s engagement with the open source community.<\/p>\n

From 2003-2008, Shawn ran Bloomberg\u2019s Infrastructure department and then global Engineering group, where he helped streamline the product development process, bolster the network and compute infrastructure and create a User Experience (UX) design team, which now influences product development company-wide.<\/p>\n

Shawn is regularly recognized as one of the leading technology leaders in the finance industry.<\/p>\n

He has been included on the TabbFORUM 40<\/a>, an annual list of the top technology-driven innovators who are having great impact in the finance sector, in the top ten of Institutional Investor<\/em>\u2019s ranking of financial industry technology leaders, and\u00a0 on Constellation Research\u2019s Artificial Intelligence 150 (AI150)<\/a> list of the top executives leading AI transformation efforts around the globe.<\/p>\n

Shawn is a Chair Emeritus of the Board of Visitors for Columbia University\u2019s Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science, a member of the Data Science Institute Advisory Council, and a member of the Campbell Center for Entrepreneurship Advisory Council. He serves on the board of Latino U College Access (LUCA)<\/a>, an effective non-profit that empowers high-achieving, low-income, first-generation, Latino youth on their journey to and through college.<\/p>\n

Prior to joining Bloomberg in 2003, Shawn worked for Bear Stearns & Co. and also held positions at Mentor Graphics and IBM. Shawn received B.S. and M.S. degrees from Columbia University’s Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\t\t\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
