A day in the life of a Bloomberg engineer

“I actually have a non-traditional background in tech. I went to college for interdisciplinary arts and then I did grad school in anthropology and cultural studies. After that, I went into software engineering bootcamp, and that was my road into tech.”

“To really understand what work-life balance looks like at Bloomberg, I think I need to go back to my first day when I met with my manager. There was always a sense of we want to do good work and we want to do it fast and well, but it shouldn’t overflow into our lives with our families and friends.”

“Since joining Bloomberg I’ve actually been on a number of different teams. I originally started off as a data analyst in New York City, as my background is in finance. I then moved over to a front end team working on the Terminal’s UI before finally making the move over to Bloomberg London.”

“Although I’m responsible for teams here in London and in New York and in Hong Kong in very different time zones, I think Bloomberg as a culture allows the space anyone needs in order to balance their work, and things outside work.”

“I joined Bloomberg on the finance side. I started in Global Data doing private equity. I taught myself with Python and it kind of went from there. So after about four years I decided I wanted to do it full-time, and Bloomberg has an internal mentoring program for those that want to move from internal departments to the engineering department.”

“Honestly, I didn’t know a lot about finance before I applied to Bloomberg or started working at Bloomberg, but I found that once I got here, that was totally okay. That was not a problem at all because there’s so many resources here to help you learn what you need to learn in order to work on financial software applications.”

“A lot of the products that we have out of San Francisco are newer products within the company so we’ve had the chance to build a tech stack completely from scratch.”

“Before I started to work on any new project or any new feature, my product owners and my managers clearly explain how the software should be used in which context, and clarify any questions I had about financial topics.”

“A typical day for me would be a good mix of design discussions, a couple of code reviews, and finally, of course coding as well.”
