Students with practical business experience have a better chance of getting a job – everywhere around the world.

We found it to be true in Colombia, where a graduate of Universidad de Los Andes said he got a job in Chicago as a futures trader because he knew how to use the Bloomberg Professional service, also known as the Bloomberg terminal. Now, he uses it every day and is teaching his colleagues how to get the most from this innovative software platform.

More than 700 universities around the world offer Bloomberg Financial Market Labs where students get hands-on experience with the same technology used by the world’s leading business and financial professionals.

Colombia is among the top five countries in the world with the most Bloomberg terminals at universities, demonstrating the country’s commitment to higher education. Kevin Kelly of Bloomberg’s Global Data business, and I visited eight universities: Universidad de los Andes, Universidad Santo Tomas, Universidad del Rosario, Universidad Externado de Colombia, Fundacio Universitaria Los Libertad, Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, Universidad de La Sabana and University of Cesa.

We showed the students and teachers how Bloomberg News can get a company to disclose information before it tells the world at large, how to use the exchange-traded fund flows data to tell what professionals are buying and selling daily, and how we show the change of borrowing cost for companies, industries or countries.

Many professors use our data-driven stories so students can learn what’s going on in the markets, and how to help experience Bloomberg functions. We plan to go back to Colombia soon to hold larger training sessions. We feel that the students in this country will want to be smarter and more competitive and we will help them achieve that.

Bloomberg has been working with universities around the world for more than 20 years, helping students deepen their research, develop analytical skills, and learn the tool used by more than 325,000 business and investment professionals around the globe. Available in 15 languages, the Bloomberg terminal contains a wealth of data on market-moving events, and is helpful to those studying many disciplines including: accounting, agriculture, corporate finance, energy, international trade, journalism, management, marketing and public policy.
