Bloomberg Joins Trees for Cities to Mark Its Millionth Tree Planting

March 20, 2019

Today, Bloomberg Philanthropies CEO Patti Harris joined  Bloomberg’s long-time environmental partner Trees for Cities to plant its millionth tree. The tree was planted on the grounds of St. Thomas’ Hospital in London’s Westminster, just a few meters away from the first tree planted by the organization in 1993. This effort, and the partnership it represents, is tied to Bloomberg’s overall commitment to driving strong, measurable, and local action on climate change.

Patti was joined by other supporters of the organization, including actor and comedian Sir Michael Palin and members from London’s City Hall.

To mark the planting of a new generation of urban trees, pupils from Dormers Wells Infants School planted the millionth-and-first tree, and read a collection of poems they have written to highlight the value trees bring to our cities.

As one of Bloomberg’s longest standing environmental partners in Europe, Trees for Cities has helped Bloomberg identify and work with local, like-minded organizations in 16 cities across the UK, Europe, Middle East, and Africa. Together, the two organizations have planted more than 200,000 trees and engaged over 1,250 employees and 26,000 local volunteers to plant and care for trees.

In December 2018, Trees for Cities helped deliver Mayor of London Sadiq Khan’s program to plant nearly 80,000 new trees across London as part of London’s biggest ever tree planting weekend.  Bloomberg volunteers supported this effort and in December planted one for each  of the company’s 4,000 employees in London at the Forest Road site in East London.

Trees for Cities is a UK charity working at a national and international level to improve lives by planting trees in cities. The charity works with local communities to cultivate lasting change in neighborhoods – from revitalizing forgotten spaces to getting people excited about growing, foraging and eating healthy food.

Bloomberg works with a wide range of partners, including charities, cities, businesses, and citizen’s groups, to address some of the most serious threats to our environment. In 2018, more than 2,000 Bloomberg employees dedicated 17,370 hours in 33 cities around the world to local greening efforts, helping to plant more than 15,000 trees and plants worldwide.  Bloomberg’s long-standing commitment to environmental stewardship also includes the ambitious MillionTreesNYC initiative launched in 2007 during the administration of Mayor Michael Bloomberg in New York City. The one-millionth tree was planted in 2015, two years ahead of schedule.
