Bloomberg Appoints New Head of Diversity & Inclusion in the Americas

September 21, 2021

NEW YORK – In a move that strengthens its commitment to creating a workplace culture that values difference, fosters inclusion and promotes collaboration, Bloomberg today announced Fatima Shama as the company’s new Head of Diversity & Inclusion, Americas.

Fatima Shama, Bloomberg's Head of Diversity & Inclusion, Americas

Based in New York, Fatima will be responsible for driving Bloomberg’s diversity and inclusion strategy across the Americas. In this role, she will leverage her knowledge, skills, and experiences to develop the organization’s strategic response to racial and social justice moments in the U.S. and throughout the region. She joins the company’s Global Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) leadership team, which is tasked with establishing the strategic direction, goals, and accountabilities to drive and embed Equity, Diversity and Inclusion across the firm.

“What excites me about this new role is the moment we’re living in, the awakening in our nation and beyond, the global dialogue we are currently having, and the opportunity to be part of the change I want to see in the world around us,” said Fatima. “My entire career has been D&I focused, recognizing the relevance and dynamic reality of who we are as diverse peoples with rich lived experiences, and trying to engage in dialogues where everyone is included, accepted, and has a sense of belonging, and anyone has the opportunity to prosper and have equitable outcomes.”

Prior to joining Bloomberg, Fatima most recently served as Executive Director of The Fresh Air Fund since 2015, where she returned to her roots working with and for children and families across New York City’s low-income communities. Her work at The Fresh Air Fund was focused on equity at its core within youth development, and the programs and opportunities for youth during the summer and year-round. During this time, she guided The Fund through the pandemic and demonstrated resilience and creativity to serve children in New York City’s low-income communities with free outdoor summer experiences.

“As we continue to shape Bloomberg’s inclusive workplace culture, it is critical that our D&I team’s leaders possess diverse experiences and worldviews,” said Pamela Hutchinson, Bloomberg’s Global Head of Diversity and Inclusion. “Fatima’s thought leadership and years of tireless effort to better the lives of underrepresented groups and communities of color will inspire, motivate and benefit Bloomberg’s employees, and we are excited to have her join us.”

Fatima served in the Bloomberg Administration from 2006-2014. She initially joined as a public health policy advisor, working on issues of literacy and access to health care. She was then asked to serve as the education policy advisor and was subsequently promoted to Senior Policy Advisor on Education to Deputy Mayor Dennis Walcott. In 2009, Mayor Bloomberg appointed Fatima to serve as NYC’s Commissioner of Immigrant Affairs, where she was charged with creating a robust integration strategy on the economic, social and civic opportunities for immigrant New Yorkers.

After the Bloomberg Administration, Fatima served as Vice President, Strategic Development & External Affairs at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn. In this role, she led organization-wide activities related to fundraising, development strategies, campaigns, special events, public relations, communications, and marketing, as well as provided support for government affairs and community outreach efforts.

Fatima serves on the Boards of the New York Foundation, Coro Leadership New York, and the New York Immigration Coalition, and serves as a Trustee for the Pinkerton Foundation.

Fatima proudly identifies as a “hyphenated American,” and is fluent in Spanish, Portuguese and Arabic, and has working knowledge of French. She lives in Westchester County with her husband and three sons.
