The first Bloomberg Square Mile Relay race in São Paulo last night saw more than 50 teams from leading corporations and financial services firms compete in the city’s Itaim Bibi’s district. OMINT took the coveted trophy and the title of “fastest firm in the city”, completing the 10 laps of the one-mile (1.6km) course in Parque do Povo in 55:41.
Cícero Barreto, captain of the winning team Omint said: “No matter who the winning team is, this event is about the sport and getting together. It is a great environment and it was a very special day! Thanks to all who organised the event.”
Next in the race was Itaú Private, in second place, with a time of 01:07:21 and Oracle in third place with a time of 01:07:34. Individually, the fastest runner of the night, with a single mile time of 4:42, was Felipe Carlos from Care Club.
In recognition of the increasing number of female runners, a new award category was also introduced. Care Club captured this inaugural award for “Fastest Mixed Team” with a combined running time of 01:07:55.
“Bloomberg has been connecting Brazilian institutional investors and corporations to the world’s financial markets over the past 20 years,” said Geraldo Coelho, Bloomberg Head of South America Sales, who is based in São Paulo. “Now, we are proud to bring to Brazil a global franchise that is fun and will benefit the community.”
A key race feature is giving back to the local community. During the post-race awards ceremony Parque Ibirapuera Conservação was presented with a charitable contribution of $60,000 to help support the non-profit organization. In addition, runners and their families and friends have been invited to participate in a special conservation project in the park on November 11th to have a positive impact on the city.
“The Bloomberg Square Mile Relay is like no other sporting event, as the city’s workers come together for a night of camaraderie, teamwork, celebration and networking. It’s great to see so many companies join us for this inaugural race in São Paulo, which now joins nine other cities across the world that host the relay annually,” said James Hassett, Managing Director of event organizer Square Mile Sport.
The Bloomberg Square Mile Relay São Paulo will return next year, but the baton now passes to Singapore on October 26 and then to Hong Kong on November 9, the final stop of the ten race series.
Promoting a healthy work-life balance and a sense of camaraderie among colleagues, the Bloomberg Square Mile Relay is a global race series in ten cities across the world including São Paulo, Singapore, Hong Kong, Dubai, Sydney, New York, Tokyo, San Francisco London and Shanghai.
