Good for Business, Good for the Planet

At Bloomberg, we’re committed to contributing meaningfully to the communities in which we work and live. As our global footprint has grown, we’ve expanded our efforts to contribute to a greener, healthier planet. Today we’re releasing our third annual sustainability report, which takes stock of our efforts to date and charts our path forward.

Like many companies, we’re aggressively pursuing ways to reduce our environmental impact. Since launching our sustainability program in 2007, we’ve completed more than 350 individual sustainability projects, improved our emissions intensity by 30% and halved our carbon footprint. Even more exciting, we’ve saved $43 million in the process.

Unlike most companies, however, our reach across the world’s financial sector gives us a unique opportunity to develop tools that bring awareness and transparency to global sustainability initiatives and help our clients make investment decisions with sustainability objectives in mind. In 2009, we launched our Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) product. With enhancements including BNEF’s carbon-market analysis, BBNA’s environmental reporting and’s dedicated media channel that explores the intersection of business and sustainability, we’re helping our clients benefit from opportunities that benefit the world.

What excites me most about our initiatives – both internal and external — is that they make a strong business case for sustainability. It’s time to discard the myth that companies and investors must choose between acting responsibly and making money.

As enthusiastic as we are about our results to date, though, we realize that this is just the beginning. In addition to reviewing our results for the past year, we’ve also introduced BSustainable 2020, a framework that will guide our future efforts to further reduce our environmental impact, create new products for our clients and deepen our commitment to our communities.
