Bloomberg Launches Korean-Language News Service

August 29, 2013

SEOUL — Bloomberg today announced its first-ever Korean-language service with real-time, breaking news on the Korean economy and financial markets, as well as key international market-moving headlines.

The local-language content is the latest in the company’s products and services tailored for Bloomberg subscribers in the Korean market. The expanded domestic coverage will come from a new team of dedicated reporters and editors, based in Seoul. Bloomberg will also provide in-brief Korean translations of top-news stories from its global network of journalists, who produce over 5,000 stories a day from 146 bureaus in 72 countries worldwide.

“Our mission at Bloomberg News is to show that South Korea belongs to the world and the world belongs to South Korea,” said Matthew Winkler, Editor-in-Chief of Bloomberg News. “We have been in Korea since 1996, opened a state-of-the-art Seoul office last year, and provide news coverage for an increasingly
sophisticated group of corporate and financial professionals in Korea.”

Chris Collins, Executive Editor at Bloomberg News for the Asia-Pacific region, said, “Corporations and institutional investors will find our new Korean-language news service invaluable, whether they’re making a split-second investment decision or looking for more perspective on the Korean marketplace.”

Bloomberg celebrated the Korean news service launch yesterday with a toast by Hyun Oh-seok, South Korea’s Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister of Economic Affairs. This follows the celebration last year when it opened the new office at the Mirae Asset Center One, in the heart of the capital.

William Pesek, Bloomberg View’s Asia Pacific Columnist, moderated a panel discussion at the event that discussed risks and opportunities for Korea in the next 12 months. The panel, called, “As US Fed Zigs, Asia Zags?” featured: Mi-Young Jeong, Head of Currency Research, Samsung Futures; Dr. Jaewoo Lee, Chief Economist of Korea, Bank of America Merrill Lynch; Jin-Woo Lee, Head of Research, NH Investment & Futures Co. Ltd.; and Paul Mackel, Head of Asian Currency Research, HSBC.
