Bloomberg Businessweek Wins National Magazine Award
May 09, 2012
NEW YORK — Bloomberg Businessweek has won the 2012 National
Magazine Award for General Excellence among General-Interest
magazines. The National Magazine awards, the preeminent awards
for magazine journalism sponsored by the American Society of
Magazine Editors (ASME), were announced last night at the annual
awards presentation at the New York Marriott Marquis.
The General Excellence award was bestowed by a judging panel of
industry peers after reviewing Bloomberg Businessweek’s October
10-16, October 31-November 6, and November 14-20, 2011 issues.
Editor Josh Tyrangiel accepted the award thanking Bloomberg News
editor-in-chief Matthew Winkler, Bloomberg Businessweek chairman
Norman Pearlstine, and Bloomberg Businessweek president Paul
Bascobert for their continued support. Tyrangiel also commended
the Bloomberg Businessweek staff for their dedication and
talent.
This is the first “Ellie” — an industry term for the awards
based on the Alexander Calder elephant sculptures that serve as
trophies — the magazine has won since Bloomberg acquired
Businessweek in 2009 and relaunched it under Tyrangiel’s
direction. The last National Magazine Award General Excellence
win for Businessweek was in 1996.
The reinvention of Businessweek under Bloomberg has been
celebrated by both readers and advertisers for its dedication to
innovative editorial and design, distinct personality and
engaging, graphic stories about who and what will be shaping
business next. Bloomberg Businessweek continues to expand its
readership as each week Tyrangiel and his team produce an
indispensible magazine for the new breed of business leader who
is more globally minded and entrepreneurial.
In January 2012, Bloomberg Businessweek’s ratebase was raised
nearly 9 percent to 980,000.
International circulation has doubled and individually paid
circulation has grown 13 precent (second half 2009 vs. second
half 2011), according to the Audit Bureau of Circulation.
Bloomberg Businessweek’s advertising continues to grow, with the
magazine posting a 23 percent increase in advertising pages
since its acquisition by Bloomberg (2009 vs. 2011), and 8.2
percent growth in the first quarter of 2012, according to the
Publishers Information Bureau.
The Bloomberg Businessweek+ App surpassed 100K iPad subscribers
in the first year since its debut, and has won four prestigious
awards, most recently a Webby Award for the best News app. BBW
on iPhone was launched in April 2012.
