Bringing clarity to a complex world is the mission of Bloomberg News. By providing real-time information and analysis, we help our clients make critical decisions every day. With a commitment to objectivity and an international perspective, Bloomberg provides a consistent and trusted voice in financial news, powered by talented reporters and producers around the world.
A focused perspective for a changing world
Caroline Connan, a reporter and producer based in the Paris bureau, describes the Helsinki summit meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin as “a challenging and historical moment:” one she covered in close collaboration with her fellow reporters.
“Along with my colleague Annmarie Hordern, we followed the events unfolding outside the presidential palace, where Trump and Putin met for more than two hours,” Caroline explains. “Meanwhile, we were in constant contact with our U.S. colleague Kevin Cirilli, who was inside the astonishing press conference where Trump and Putin aligned themselves against U.S. Intelligence conclusions.”
As a member of the world’s largest newsroom, Caroline is able to create opportunity within Bloomberg’s dynamic, influential network.
“Anything can happen in my role”
“After working for a French speaking television network, I applied for a position on Bloomberg’s French team, eventually became a field producer, then a reporter, and was amazed with Bloomberg’s global footprint,” Caroline says.
Thanks to Bloomberg and a little hard work, Caroline has traveled to most major cities in Europe covering politics and finance, helping to shape her career.
Currently, Caroline is based in Paris for Bloomberg TV focusing on French news stories, conducting a wide range of interviews, producing TV packages, and curating special shows. “From covering the French elections, OPEC meetings from Vienna to Algiers, EU summits in Brussels or the Saint Petersburg Economic Forum, to working at the G20 conference or Davos, anything can happen in my role,” says Caroline.
Covering stories that make history
The Helsinki summit was the latest in a series of historic events Caroline has covered for Bloomberg News. Her work surrounding the 2012 French presidential election served as Caroline’s introduction to the Paris News Bureau, and she was on the ground reporting in 2015 when terrorists killed at least 130 people and wounded hundreds throughout Paris.
“Though it was a very emotional event to report on as a Parisian, I had to remain objective and do my job so the world could understand what happened that night,” Caroline recalls.
In 2017, Caroline was reporting at the center of another pivotal French presidential election and interviewed President Emmanuel Macron twice before he was elected. She made it her objective to show the world how President Macron defeated Marine Le Pen, a pro-nationalist who opposed globalization.
“Reporting on how Macron toppled Le Pen when populism is on the rise was a pinnacle example of what Bloomberg News is all about, because we covered the topic from the very start to the end,” says Caroline.
Thanks to her colleagues, Caroline feels that the power of team work makes it easier to get the job done no matter how challenging the task.
“I am fortunate to have the producers, cameramen, editors, and the Paris bureau reporters that support me on and off of the camera,” says Caroline.
Getting involved
Recently, Caroline, along with other women at Bloomberg, gave media training to a dozen women involved with projects supported by the C40 organization, which takes bold action to mitigate climate change and works toward a healthier and more sustainable future.
“Because we are located where the Paris Climate agreement took place, we feel more involved in the French efforts to lead the fight against climate change after the U.S. pulled out of the climate agreement,” says Caroline.
Caroline’s access and experience as a Bloomberg reporter have given her valuable perspective as the financial landscape in Europe, and France in particular, has changed. “Geopolitical uncertainties and the battle between protectionism and globalization will continue to dominate the agenda in the coming years,” she explains. “Since Brexit and the election of Donald Trump, I feel that our audience and more generally, investors, look at France with a renewed interest, as if France was becoming again the new, alternative leader of the Western world.”
Driven to provide value for the business, Caroline sees her work contributing to a larger picture. “I feel that my purpose for working at Bloomberg is to make the international and business audience better understand France and Europe.”
