Born in 1964 in Langfang, China, Wang failed national examination for university for three times, and he started a retail business selling cooking oil and beer in his early twenties. He found no luck in a cab business and quit three years later.

Wang saw opportunity in liquefied gas as Chines government open door for private company to invest in the industry in 1986. He established ENN gas in 1992, and helped Langfang to construct gas pipelines. The company acquired the exclusive right for urban natural gas pipeline in the city in 1995, and expanded the business in other cities in the following years, according to the company's website.

The group operates the largest private liquefied natural gas networks in China, and it acquired a $750 million stake in Australian gas producer Santos in 2016. ENN Group has developed into a conglomerate with three publicly traded companies, including ENN Energy, ENN Ecological Holdings and Beibu Gulf Tourism.
