Confidence rating:

The majority of Sehgal's fortune is derived from a 90 percent stake in Noida-based Samvardhana Motherson International. The closely held company is the parent of publicly traded Motherson Sumi Systems, India's biggest auto parts maker, and also has other interests in the automotive industry. His stake Samvardhana is derived from the company's annual report published on its website.

Samvardhana is valued based on the average price-to-earnings multiples of four publicly traded peers: Bharat Forge, Bosch, Amara Raja Batteries and its subsidiary, Motherson Sumi Systems.

Sehgal also owns 3 percent of Motherson Sumi directly, according to disclosures with India's stock exchange as of September 2017. The company reported revenue of $6.3 billion in the year ended March 2017 and has more than 38,000 employees, according to its annual report. Samvardhana's stake in Motherson Sumi is excluded in the valuation to avoid double counting.

A spokesperson for Motherson Sumi declined to comment on the valuation.

Biography

Birthdate: 1956
Family: Unmarried, No children

Born in Delhi, India, Sehgal is an Australian businessman and entrepreneur, the son of a mining engineer with the government. His maternal grandmother was a jeweler who imported silver. While studying at Delhi University, he would do the paperwork at the airport for his grandfather, earning commission for every kilogram of silver imported.

In 1975, he co-founded the Samvardhana Motherson group with his mother with the mission of entering the silver trade. The group evolved into a manufacturer of auto parts. The main company of the group is Motherson Sumi Systems, established in 1986, and is a joint venture with Japan's Sumitomo Wiring Systems.

For years, most of the company revenue came from supplying parts to Maruti Suzuki. But in 1995, Sehgal decided not to focus on one company and no one client would account for more than 25 percent of its sales. The group acquired Irish wiring harness company Wexford Electronics in 2002, the first of a series of acquisitions that has expanded the group's footprint to more than two dozen countries.
