The majority of Lal's fortune is derived from his stake in publicly traded Eicher Motors, a New Delhi-based automaker. The billionaire is credited with 51 percent of the company, which he holds directly, through his family and their holding companies, according to a filing on the company's share holding pattern from March 2017. Lal is credited with all the shares held by his relatives to reflect his status as founder.

The value of his cash investments is based on an analysis of share sales, dividends, market performance, taxes and charitable contributions.

Ashim Gupta, a spokesman for Eicher Motors, did not respond to requests for comment on Lal's net worth.

Vikram Lal was born in Delhi in 1942. He attended boarding school Doon in Dehradun, India, and studied mechanical engineering at Darmstadt Technical University in Germany. His father established Goodearth Company to sell imported tractors in India in 1948, and became the first to manufacture them in the country 12 years later.

Lal joined the family business in 1966 and incorporated Eicher Motors in 1982. He acquired the rights to the Royal Enfield name 30 years later. Eicher sold more than 500,000 Royal Enfield bikes for the year ended March 31, 2016, according to its annual report. The company also produces trucks, buses and other commercial vehicles.

Lal retired in 1997 and his son Siddhartha took over the business as the chief executive officer and managing director. Under Siddhartha's management, Eicher Motors formed a joint venture with Swedish automaker Volvo in 2008.

Lal founded the Goodearth Education Foundation in 1996 and has been the president of Common Cause, a public interest organization, since 2004. He's involved in activities related to governance reform, children's health and education. He lives in Delhi with his wife Anita.
