Pan Sutong was born in China's southern city of Shaoguan in Guangdong province in 1963. He was raised by his grandmother until the age of 13 when she died of cancer, after which he moved to California to live with a step-grandmother. He failed to graduate from high school and moved back to Hong Kong using a family loan when he was 21.

Pan started selling Japanese electronics and founded Matsunichi Colour Display Monitor in 1993. He bought Emperor Technology Co. and renamed it Matsunichi Communication Holdings Limited and Goldin Properties Holdings Limited in 2002. Six years later, he acquired Fortune International Holdings, a publicly traded company listed in Hong Kong, and renamed it Goldin Financial Holdings Ltd.

A horsing enthusiast, Pan was elected vice president of the Federation of International Polo. The Goldin Group sponsored the Goldin Charity Day, a polo competition held in England, where Princes William and Harry competed in 2014.

He purchased his first winery, the Sloan Estate, in Napa Valley in 2011. He bought three more vineyards in the Bordeaux region two years later. The billionaire lives in Hong Kong with his wife and child.
